Mud seems to be an integral part of Tom’s Autumn campaign so its a good job that he is very much at home riding in it! The photo maybe of the stables at Ballindenisk last week but they represent Dauntsey just as much! Being held on the banks of the river the heavy overnight rain quickly turned the footing to a quagmire and as always, it was the best riders and horses who coped and came out on top.
Tom had a particularly good day at the office. Braveheart B ( Dougie) excelled himself to win his novice section adding just 6 time faults to his 27 dressage and being one of the elite group to leave all the showjumps up in what was a very soft arena. Nasdaq High ( Bodie) also joined that group and he added just 3 time to his 28 dressage which was good enough for the runner up slot in his section.
The Magician (Mars) would have certainly been excused a couple of rails in his intermediate novice showjumping as the track was up to height as well as being in heavy going. Mars had done his usual smart test for a 30 and he really jumped his socks off to just tap out the final element of the treble for 4 faults. It was a day when you needed some power off the ground and Mars certainly has that. He then went cross country to finish just 1 second over the optimum time for 3rd place.
The rain mostly held off so the ground became pretty tacky and Tom returns tomorrow with two more novice rides. Hats off as always to Beanie Sturgess who is never defeated by a bit of mud and kept the show on the road, even doing sterling service on her farm tractor towing trucks in and out of the lorry park!
