Fig was an absolute hero today as he jumped his socks off and was pretty unlucky to just catch a single rail in the showjumping to add 4 faults to is dressage score. It didn’t look easy in there for sure but Laura Collett and London 52 jumped the clear to put them ahead, and it was a very classy round.
Fast forward things onto the cross country and Fig gave Tom a great spin for the equal fastest time of the day for just 4.4 and eventual runner up spot behind Laura Collett and London 52 who added just 7.6 time to take the win. The rail might have cost Fig the win but his record is pretty amazing this season with top three at Belton, Burnham Market and Chatsworth CI 4 * S competitions. There were plenty of mishaps for the field in both the jumping phases and whilst Laura led from start to finish Tom was climbing from 7th to 2nd with his superb cross country round.
Chatsworth’s rolling hills and tricky terrain mean that “you have to ride with your brain rather than just bravely” said Tom and knowing your horses stride pattern and having them trained for adjustability is a key factor in Tom’s cross country which is what makes him so capable of riding so many different types of horses. So a long drive home from the Derbyshire hills but a great weekend for the whole team. I imagine they are longing for some sleep!
