Camphire Dressage ( Thursday)

Tom and his team have 5 horses out in Camphire with CHF Cooliser ( Eliza) in the CIO4*S Nations Cup team, No Excuse ( Jimmy) in the CI4*L for Ros Canter, and Brookkfield Benjamin Bounce (Bounce), Lordships Graffalo (Walter) and Bob Chaplin in the CI3*S.

That’s allot of horses and three different tests and courses to be learned and walked! And add into that the fact that whilst we in the UK are enjoying some fabulous summer weather there are lots of photos of very wet people coming out of Camphire!  I don’t think Tom will have much time to do anything but ride and he certainly hit the ground running with 3 out of 5 tests competed on Thursday.

Eliza did a great test in the Nations Cup to post a 30 and be inside the top 10 at the end of the day which covered more than 2/3 of the field.  For such a relatively inexperienced mare it was a great team debut and nice to see her sporting the Team GB flag.

In the CI3*S Bounce did a cracking 28.4 which was good enough for the top 4 in a big class which again ran most of the dressage on Thursday.  Bounce is looking more and more assured by the week and he is definitely building a great partnership with Tom.

Walter is a good looking horse and he also did a smooth test for a 30.2 which left him inside the top 12 at the end of the day which is no disgrace. The class is an odd mixture of genuine up and coming young horses ( like Tom’s) and seriously experienced 4 and 5 star horses having an International run for a good time. The leader, Kazuma Tomoto, and Japan Racing’s Brookpark Vikenti has won Chatsworth this season and was 5th at Boekelo in 2018. In 8th spot is Sam Watson and Tullabeg Flamenco who finished 12th at Luhmuhlen and it just goes to show how well regarded the Camphire event is that riders choose to run their top horses in the lower classes simply for a good outing.

Tomorrow sees Bob Chaplin setting out his first international journey for a while in the CI3*S and Jimmy starting his first CI4*L with Tom…. he was 2nd at Millstreet CI4L with Ros Canter last year at his first attempt so no pressure!
